Description

Amanda Simpson is a transgender woman who worked at SAGA and Wingspan in the early-to-mid 2000s as an activist. She was a commissioner on the Tucson GLBT Commission from 2001-2008. In 2009 she was appointed by the Obama administration to the Department of Commerce as the Senior Technical Advisor to the Bureau of Industry and Security. She moved from there to the Pentagon in 2011, where she worked her way up into the highest position a transgender person has achieved in the U.S. government so far: Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Operational Energy. This position was formed with her as its first Deputy Assistant and with her help she reformed the Department of Defense's energy expenditure, making Operational Energy the third cleanest energy entity in the United States.

SAGA produced this award to honor her presence, high achievement, and past activism with them.
